health is wealth

I was reading Dean Karnazes' latest blog post: Health is wealth and although he's talking about the US - it's just as applicable here in Australia...

"The economic downturn is forcing people to re-evaluate priorities.  The age of materialism is coming under increasing scrutiny, if by nothing else than necessity.  People simply don’t have the means to fund excessive indulgences the way they once may have.  So what now?

Evidence shows that a growing number of people are now putting more value on health and physical well being. (OK, maybe not hard evidence, but I asked a couple of friends and that is what they told me.)  If the rising number of participants in athletic events such as 10-Ks and marathons is any indication, some might say this trend started a while ago.  No doubt the economic crisis is forcing the issue.  Maybe this is just the type of rescue plan (er…stimulus package) the country needs.  Anything that gets Joe Plumber off the couch and exercising is a good thing, right..."
